Dear Jon Stewart, from a Doctor

I loved this guest piece.

Levi Quackenboss

This is a guest post by Dr. Helen Box.JS Dear Jon Stewart:

I was sorry to hear that you are retiring from the Daily Show because I feel it is often the only place that we are presented with the truth in American media. One of my favorite bits that you do is when you show a clip of what someone says in the media, and then expose how they took the opposite stance in the past.

As a parting gift, I am going to do the same thing for you.

In June of 2014 you had Dr. Paul Offit on your show, promoting vaccines. Did he tell you the story about the time he made $6 million on the sale of his rotavirus vaccine patent?  Since he didn’t mention it on the show, and nobody asked him about it, all that you did was provide him with a…

Regarding Vaccines – In Response to the Info-graphic posted by Upworthy

I consider myself an avid researcher.  That is to say, I’m pretty good at checking facts and finding information people need, heck it’s my job.  So when I saw the latest info-graphic about vaccines that has been making it’s way around Facebook, I felt the need to respond.  Several people I know had shared it, most likely because they agree that vaccinations are the way to go, maybe they do not question the validity of the graphic at all, they take it in at face value.  That’s fine.  However, let me be one of those parents who do not vaccinate, who have thoroughly researched the matter before making a decision, take a chance and try to really get to the bottom of what this bias info-graphic tries to portray.  I’ll post the info-graphic here, just in case you missed it :

Ok so it starts off with the Wakefield study.  Of course it does, because like so many others, people tend to think that parents who choose not to vaccinate do so because they are afraid their child might become autistic.  Perhaps the study is what sparked the initial doubt, maybe, but back in 1998 I was more worried about graduating than I was about vaccinating my future children.  But when I did have my first child and I was researching vaccines back in 2008, I accepted that it had been proven beyond a doubt that vaccines do not cause autism.  New studies suggest that Autism can be explained through varying degrees of mitochondrial dysfunction.  In layman’s terms it simply means that the affected person’s brain cells cannot produce enough energy to ignite the neurons to make the connections needed to function “normally.”  Now though I did not know this back then, I had some understanding that those on the spectrum were born that way, and maybe, just maybe, vaccines could make their conditions worse.  But of course there was no escaping the debate.  It was all over parenting forums and the news with Jenny and her son.  I thought the least I could do was a little bit of research and decide for myself, and not just blindly follow the routine infant vaccine schedule.

At the time, most parents I spoke with about vaccinations had chosen not to vaccinate for a few different reasons, none being that they were afraid their child might suddenly develop autism.  The main reasons were and probably are still true today; they were afraid of a vaccine injury, they already had had one child effected with a vaccine injury so chose to not continue with the rest of their children, their children may have been immune compromised, or simply for religious or philosophical reasons. Now I don’t want to get too ahead of myself, I can come back to why all these reasons are valid reasons, but let’s get back to the info-graphic.

So Dr. Wakefield, let’s see.  Ok so a very credible medical journal publishes a study conducted by 14 different Md’s.  The findings clearly state that it was THE PARENTS of the children involved in the study who associated the MMR with their children’s behavioral symptoms, no proof of a link to vaccines was mentioned at all.  And yes, they all had intestinal abnormalities and developmental regression which the study states may have been caused by possible environmental triggers. Wow! Really?  The guy gets dug through the dirt for that?  Oh so it wasn’t based on statistics eh?  No control group… talking to families and getting feedback from human experience really doesn’t count for much these days I guess.

So why was it retracted?  Not because other researchers couldn’t duplicate his study, not because the information in the study was falsified, not because a reporter Brian Deer made claims of financial conflicts of interest against Dr Wakefield, but I do believe the latter is where it began.  Because of the claims, the GMC did investigate and did find Wakefield guilty of being dishonest and misleading the families about payments and conducting unnecessary procedures ect. And perhaps the investigation was valid, from the panel’s pov, perhaps they felt he did cut corners or go against policy to prove something he really felt needed to be known.  But if he really did take advantage, if he really did these children a disservice, then why would the parents of the children in his study defend him?  Well you can read the hearing notes and decide whether or not you agree with what he did, and why he did it.

Ok so the paper was retracted, and then apparently there were billions of new studies with gazillions of children involved and no link to autism was found.  So says the info-graphic.  Now it’s really too bad that the links to the studies were not given in the info-graphic, but come on, who references an info-graphic?  All the bit.ly links do is take me to different articles posted around the net.  So I had to dig a little bit, no biggie.

1999 study. What this study found was no temporal associations with the administration of the MMR shot and the onset of autism.  It’s a rather small study but that doesn’t make it unbelievable.  What I do tend to question are the clinical records.  How do we know how accurate they are?  How do we know if it wasn’t the third or fourth doctor that the child had seen before coming to a diagnosis?  Were accurate patient histories performed and recorded?  Hmmm. Also what I find questionable is that there was no real similarities found, should not most of the patients begun to show signs of their condition before or around their second birthday? Also, no reports that any one of the 500 children studied had been seen clinically for concerns before the MMR.  Another hmmmm.

2001 Study. Well this one was a lot to take in.  But wow they kind of kick themselves in the butt on this one.  So they are saying that the numbers don’t match as far as MMR coverage and the GINORMOUS jump of the amount of children developing autism.  They of course recognize the increase but shrug off that it was from the MMR.  Does anyone with any common sense see the problem here?  So how many vaccines were children now getting as of 1988, when this jump began?  Maybe it’s not JUST the MMR that creates an instantaneous injury, is it not possible that the heavy metals from other newer vaccines (new back then) hung around and starting creating problems?  Did they not realize that nine new vaccines, namely, Hib, Hep B, Varicella, Rotavirus, PCV, Influenza, Hep A, HPV, and MCV, have been added to the vaccination schedule since 1989. Why was that not taken into consideration?  SMH.

2002 Study. So in this study they looked at about half a million kids who received the MMR, then they identified the 1000 or so children who developed Autism or are on the spectrum. They report no real similarities between when they were given the shot vs when they were officially diagnosed, and voila! Proof that in those 1000 cases, the MMR did not contribute to autism, therefore the MMR officially does not cause Autism. However, I know that no two children are the same, no two children have the same genetic make-up, no two children are exposed to the exact same enviro-toxins or other allergens at the same time.  So yes, I can see that because there are 500 thousand kids given the MMR and only 1000 get autism, the vaccines themselves don’t cause it, got it. Completely understand it. But that doesn’t mean that in those 1000 cases, vaccines in general did not exasperate their conditions.  No one can say for certainty that it didn’t and if they try and tell you so they know for a fact that vaccine injuries could not possibly contribute to any number of conditions, they would be lying through their teeth.

The 2004 retractiuon from the Lancet was already discussed.  Read the link above in the trial and you can see for yourself just what “facts” were “falsified” and why.  Does not mean that Wakefield’s conclusions were incorrect, just means he broke the law to get there.  I commend his passion.

I’ve always wondered though, why aren’t other studies that link autism to vaccines being retracted if it has proven without a doubt that there is no link.  Like this one:

Hypothesis: conjugate vaccines may predispose children to autism spectrum disorders.

Oh right, it’s not the MMR.  Hmmm.

Ok so the next series of graphics deals with the effectiveness of vaccines.  I for one am not really one to doubt the effectiveness of vaccines.  I realize that they do work most of the time.  That it has helped rid the world (for the most part) of some diseases.  I understand that their effectiveness can wear off and you have to get boosters to stay immune to some diseases.  I also understand that some vaccines just don’t take.   But what I will say about the measles outbreaks and deaths is this, way to go.  No really.  Way To Go!  That being sarcastically directed to the vaccine officials,  before you jump down my throat.

I mean let’s forget that measles is the most highly contagious disease on the planet.  Forget that the vaccine itself became ineffective towards the mutating disease and that both vaccinated and un-vaccinated people were affected.  Forget that in trying to create a society of mega immune humans we were just kidding ourselves that we were becoming invincible to certain diseases.  Just read what vaccinologist Dr. Gregory Poland has to say about it.    The vaccine is a dud!  It’s effectiveness wanes!  Outbreaks are occurring in even highly vaccinated populations.  He makes a good point, does he not? And personalized vaccines?  Hmmm.  If they were deemed safer than what we have now then I may just re-consider my stance to not vaccinate.  But I will touch on vaccine effectiveness more a bit later.

Which brings us to the myths section of the info-graphic.  Apparently we all do not vaccinate because of a thimersol scare, or being utterly selfish, or that we will stress our children’s immune system or ultimately, we think that vaccines are just a money grab.

Ok let me break this down.  Themirsol, yes I know it’s only in the flu vaccine (which the CDC has admitted isn’t as effective this year).  But let’s take a really good look at the ingredients of the first shots a child will get when they are 2 months old.  They will most likely be getting all 5 of these vaccines:

  • DTaP: Diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis vaccine
  • Hib: Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine
  • IPV: Inactivated poliovirus vaccine
  • PCV: Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine
  • Rota: Rotavirus vaccine

Here are a list of ingredients.  Yes it’s from wikipedia but it’s well put together and reference checked from the CDC.

So formaldehyde aside, do you see anything else there that might make you raise an eyebrow?  No?  Not yet? Check again.

ALUMINUM.

So whats the big deal about aluminum?  Here is a bit of a background lesson on what aluminum toxicity can do.

Here are some studies linking aluminum toxicity to a variety of different illnesses.
The health effects of aluminium–a review. 1991 “This review covers the occurrence of aluminium in soil, air, water and food. In addition, aluminium levels in body tissues and its movement within the body have been considered. The adverse effects of aluminium that have been reported in recent years include Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and hyperactivity and learning disorders in children.”

Mechanisms of aluminum adjuvant toxicity and autoimmunity in pediatric populations. 2012 Immune challenges during early development, including those vaccine-induced, can lead to permanent detrimental alterations of the brain and immune function.

Aluminum vaccine adjuvants: are they safe? 2011 Experimental research, however, clearly shows that aluminum adjuvants have a potential to induce serious immunological disorders in humans. In particular, aluminum in adjuvant form carries a risk for autoimmunity, long-term brain inflammation and associated neurological complications and may thus have profound and widespread adverse health consequences.

Adjuvants and autoimmunity 2009 Owing to the adverse effects exerted by adjuvants, there is no doubt that safer adjuvants need to be developed and incorporated into future vaccines. Other needs in light of new vaccine technologies are adjuvants suitable for use with mucosally delivered vaccines, DNA vaccines, cancer and autoimmunity vaccines. In particular, there is demand for safe and non-toxic adjuvants able to stimulate cellular (Th1) immunity.

Autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (Shoenfeld’s syndrome): clinical and immunological spectrum. 2013 The activation of the immune system by adjuvants, a desirable effect, could trigger manifestations of autoimmunity or autoimmune disease.

Would decreased aluminum ingestion reduce the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease? 1991 The evidence warrants serious consideration of reducing human exposure to aluminum. We hypothesize that a public health effort to restrict human ingestion of aluminum would reduce the incidence of this common chronic illness in the elderly.

Unraveling the soul of autoimmune diseases: pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment adding dowels to the puzzle. 2013 A new syndrome, namely the autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants, has recently been defined alluding to the key role of adjuvant in inducing an immune-mediated condition. Aluminum and silicone, respectively found in vaccines and breast implants, are the most commonly known adjuvants charged with development of autoimmune conditions

Aluminum Adjuvant Linked to Gulf War Illness Induces Motor Neuron Death in Mice 2006 Whereas many environmental factors have been linked to GWI, the role of the anthrax vaccine has come under increasing scrutiny. Among the vaccine’s potentially toxic components are the adjuvants aluminum hydroxide and squalene.

Now what’s really surprising (well not really) is that the FDA still states that the risk to aluminum toxicity is low to infants and they credit this 2011 study Updated aluminum pharmacokinetics following infant exposures through diet and vaccination for confirming their stance. Now most of the studies I’ve linked to were done after this one. Also, dietary aluminum exposure is much different than intramuscularly or subcutaneously injected aluminum.  Now I could go on to explain how the study contradicts another study which lists the amount of aluminum in each vaccine is WAY above what the FDA claims is allowed in each vaccine.  However this article is a very well referenced one and gives a more thourough explanation of the absurdity of the safety claims than I ever could at the moment, I am almost at the end of my rope trying to explain all of this:
Aluminum: Has The FDA Got It All Wrong?

But I tread on.  Now that was just aluminum.  I’m not even going to address the formaldehyde, sorbitol, the themirsol in flu vaccines or any of the other ingredients.  Just look them up if you are curious.

Now the risks of aluminum seem not to be a sudden onset.  But what about the sudden vaccine injuries?  They are really, really, really, really rare…. right?  Wrong.  And I’m not talking about the expected side effects of fussiness or fevers or swollen injection sights.  I’m talking about paralysis, seizures, severe abdominal pain, brain damage or even death.  Let’s examine that for a little while.

First let’s just take a look at the numbers.  Now the US is not the only country to have a Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, however Canada (where I’m at) does not keep a public record of reported adverse advents. We are told just to contact Health Canada and report it, but the public does not have access to the records.  So I will link to the US stats from the US Department of Health and Human Services.

So basically it shows all the claims over the years and how much money was in compensation to families of the vaccine injured.  In 2014 alone, 135 claimants were awarded a total of 71 million dollars.  Now what I really find interesting, or rather, disturbing is this chart last updated March 1, 2014:

TOTAL 13,964 1,132 15,096 3,540 9,735

Look at the number of deaths reported over the years 1,132.  Injuries are much higher at 13, 964.  Now keep in mind that Vaccine Injury Reporting is very UNDER-reported, so in reality the numbers are probably much higher.  Also keep in mind that these are claims made when it was quite clear that the families involved had no doubt that the injury occurred because of the vaccine, meaning it must have happened fairly quickly, or I would think at least a few months from the time of the vaccine.  Now think of all the diseases linked to heavy metal toxicity or immune overload that do not present suddenly, mostly inflammatory or autoimmune diseases. (<- that study shows that there is indeed a risk of immune overload which is one of the “myths” in the info-graphic)

Or think in terms of World Wide where some countries have less health regulations about testing or administering vaccines.  Was it not Italy who just had the vaccine scare? They suspended the product to investigate but then after it  examining the vaccine and noting it had passed all the safety regulations, it was determined that the deaths (11 deaths after shots) were just a coincidence.  Ok, if you say so.

The World Health Organization even looked into the increasing numbers of children who are developing disease and concluded that:

“•The developing immune system can be permanently altered or ‘programmed’ by the early
exposure to environmental agents.
•A growing number of childhood diseases such as allergic disorders (e.g. allergic rhinitis,
atopic dermatitis, asthma), cancer (e.g. acute leukemia and myeloid leukemia), and others
(e.g. type 1 diabetes) have been linked to environmental exposures during prenatal and
early postnatal development.
•Because the immune response plays a critical role in each of these diseases, it is important
to consider the effects of toxicants on children’s developing immune system.”

Not once did they mention vaccines.  Not once did they take into consideration the role that vaccines, especially the yearly flu shots, can play when it comes to children developing disease.  How utterly irresponsible.

To the myth on the info-graphic that says that not vaccinating only affects my child.  Is there a worth put on children now?  Some how one child’s life is to mean more than another’s? It also does not mention that adults who fail to get boosters may infect others, or that vaccinated children or adults can still be carriers of disease and infect infants and others…  But they do admit that vaccines can fail, well who’da thought!

Lastly to the myth about Big Pharma, and how they don’t really make much money off of vaccines.  Does it really matter how much they make?  It’s their livelihood!  It’s their business, it’s how they feed their families and pay their bills.  Does it really matter that it’s only a few million here and there and not billions upon billions.  If vaccines suddenly stopped being a part of our culture, how many jobs and businesses would be bankrupt?  Just a thought.

I don’t know how much more I can add.  I just felt the need to respond to this info-graphic and its ignorant assumptions.  Yes we are getting sicker as a society but not because of measles or whooping cough outbreaks.  I can say that I did not have all of this information back in 2008 when I was researching for my daughter.  I did see the Vaccine Injury stats, I do remember looking at the leaflets that come with all the vaccines and seeing all the possible side effects.  Seven years later and two sons added to our family we still remain vaccine free and it still feels right, more so even.  I know that some parents feel that contracting a natural and most likely treatable illness opposed to developing any type of life-long disease or disability is a sound decision.

But philosophically speaking, for myself, how could I possibly support routine infant vaccines or yearly flu shots knowing all of this?  1100 hundred reported deaths may not seem like a lot compared to the billions of shots given, but where do we draw the line?  How many sacrifices need to be made for the “greater good.”  To me it’s almost like supporting all out Warfare.  Innocent victims will be injured or killed during this War on Disease just like the Innocents who are harmed in wars raging around the globe.  I refuse to support it.  I will never support any type of war as a means to an end.  I will never support vaccines unless they can make them safe for everyone and prove they are safe for everyone.

I do fear death. How could I not? I fear leaving my children or spouse behind or having my children or spouse leave this Earth before me. But does that fear justify spreading illness across the globe? Because in the end, it’s our fear of death that perpetuates the vaccine business. Making humans more susceptible to non-infectious diseases that kill us more slowly and/or seriously reduce our quality of life? I can’t get on board with that. I will not. Not even if it means saving more lives, your life, my child’s life. Even if it means eradicating an entire disease, even if it means letting these diseases return and science then has to bust it’s ass finding better treatments, because in my mind treating disease trumps creating disease any day.

But listen,  I would never hold it against anyone who does vaccinate, hell you most definitely out number us.  I understand why you can get on board with it all, I understand why you feel you must. I share your fear and the feeling of doing good for the world, but I just can’t see that vaccines are doing that, not anymore.  We all want the same thing, to be happy, to be healthy and surrounded by those we love, even in death.

Lestat is Back!

It’s been over ten years since Ann Rice has released a novel from the infamous Vampire Chronicles. Blood Canticle (2003) was the last installment narrated by Lestat himself. As a treat, also enjoyed in Blackwood Farm (2002), it included characters from Rice’s other popular occult series, The Lives of the Mayfair Witches.

In Prince Lestat (OCT 28 2014), we are brought back to the Chronicles’ roots. Lestat is back with a number of familiar characters including Lois, Armand, Marius and the Talamasca scholar David Talbot. After Queen Akasha’s death, Lestat became the only vampire known to all other undead. His kind now call upon him to return from exile and restore order to a world where his kind is at the brink of destruction. Many new vampires are introduced and together with the new technology available they hope to build a lasting vampire realm.

annerice

Anne Rice herself has been busy promoting the new installment, most recently in New York at the 2014 Thriller Fest and she will be at ComicCon in San Diego on July 26, 2014 and will be signing older copies of the Vampire Chronicles from 3-5pm.

On Rice’s facebook page she diligently engages with her fans and has spoke about her excitement with the new release several times. One question she posed her followers was “What does the word “vampire” mean to you?”  Her own personal response was heartfelt:

“The vampire for me is a metaphor for the outsider, the outcast, the predator in all of us — the lonely one, the heart and soul that feels immortal even when it knows that we all die. Vampire characters help me to talk about reality. They always have. When I’m with Lestat, and Armand and Louis, and Gabrielle, I’m in the real world. All colors blaze bright and music soars to Heaven and I’m not lonely for a while, I’m safe. And that’s why I write about them and through them and with them.”
